Special Voting

Special voting procedure

There are some instances when a voter will need to cast a special vote. You can cast a special vote if:

  • You are on the Unpublished Roll
  • Your name is not included on the publicly available Electoral Rolls used for this election or has been wrongly deleted from that roll
  • The address shown alongside your name on the printed roll is out of date, and you have been living continuously for one month or more at your new address which is in a different constituency
  • You enrolled as a residential or ratepayer elector after the printed Electoral Rolls closed
  • You have spoilt, lost or not received your ordinary voting documents
  • You have satisfied the Electoral Officer that it will not be possible or practicable for you to vote by casting an ordinary vote without incurring hardship or undue inconvenience

To cast a special vote, you must complete the special voting document and special voting declaration. The declaration will ask you to state the reason(s) you could not cast an ordinary vote. You will find the special voting document and declaration at your local city or district council.

You will also need to ensure you have enrolled on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll, Unpublished Roll and/or Ratepayer Roll, whichever applies in your case.

The special voting period is from 20 September 2019 to 12 noon on 12 October 2019.
