Getting started

Being a regional councillor is a fascinating and rewarding role and you’ll be at the forefront of making the big picture decisions that guide the development of the Wellington region.

There are a few steps you can take as you consider standing for election as a regional councillor.

You will need to think about whether you want to stand independently, or work with a political party or a team of candidates.

Start talking to people in your community to find out what is important to them.

You will need to complete a nomination form and get two people to nominate you. These people must be over 18 and enrolled to vote in the area you wish to stand in.

Nomination forms will be available from 19 July 2019. The Candidate Information Pack is available online with more information about candidate nominations, and statutory and formal requirements. If you would like a nomination form or Candidate Information Pack sent out to you, please email elections@gw.govt.nz

It is important that you understand the functions of a regional council and how it works. If you would like to learn more, please feel free to attend a meeting of the regional council to see what is involved.
